The Shih Tzu is a small dog, but it does not have a small personality. The name Shih tzu means lion dog in chinese. They were given this name due to the fact that their hair tends to look like a lion's mane. The Shih Tzu has a small face, with big eyes and beard and moustache-like appearance. These dogs have a lot of energy and even more character. It is very brave, loyal and friendly. Shih Tzu's can be stubborn, and that is why they can be difficult to train. Shih Tzu's need plenty of attention, and they get along well with children and other pets. They are quite protective, and always on alert. They are also arrogant, and very determined. When they want their way, they tend to get it!

The size of the Shih Tzu does not really vary from male to female. They can reach around 11 inches in height, and usually weigh in between 9-16 pounds. Having a short muzzle puts them at risk of having a respiratory problem, but a more common issue is eye infection. These dogs do not have tear ducts, which means they cannot control tears. The hair can get dirty, and if not cleaned properly, will cause an eye infection. Shih Tzu's can adapt to many environments, and they do not necessarily need a backyard. They do need plenty of exercise though, and daily walks are reccomended.

Shih Tzu's are small dogs, and therefore do not need a lot of food. It is reccomended that they are feed three times a day. Dry food is also better than wet food, as it will help maintain oral health. A healthy Shih Tzu can live until at least 15 years old. The healthier they are, the longer they will live. When it comes to grooming, you must get their hair cut a few times a year. You should brush your Shih tzu's hair on a daily basis, but if you keep it short, this is not neccassary. By trimming their hair, it also helps to keep them cooler in the summer.

They are one of the most energetic breed of dogs. They need constant attention. If there is someone at home for most of the day, I highly reccomend getting a Shih Tzu.
